There is a new video format on the rise. A fair share of television owners these days will likely understand the difference between the 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios, but for those of you who don't, it's the height versus width difference between your LCD or plasma television and the old tube televisions you had 10 years ago that was almost shaped like a box. So now that we've got you thinking in those terms, allow me to introduce to you the concept of Cinemascope, the newest format to hit the screens in a big way.

You may have noticed that watching movies on DVD or Blu-ray sometimes results in black bars on the top and bottom of your screen. That's because the films you are watching have been shot in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio (for reference, 16:9 is reduced to 1.78:1). To make a long story short, watching a 2.35:1 movie on a 16:9 screen results in about 33% of picture area lost in the form of black bars. To remedy this, some manufacturers are creating screens in the wider format as well as optics that will combine with your projector to produce pictures that wide.

The Appeal of Cinemascope

Also referred to as anamorphic video, Cinemascope allows viewers to watch movies the way the director intended them to be seen at the box office. Not only does cutting off the top and bottom black bars equate to greater resolution, but often times, you'll notice watching a wider and longer screen produces a sort of dramatization in the picture that simply is not matched by 16:9 video.

So how do you put this technology in your home?

How It All Comes Together

Outside of the obvious need for a projector, there are two items that are required to produce the anamorphic picture: a super-wide screen and an anamorphic lens with its respective lens adapter kit. The lens adapter kit will attach to your projector and is motorized, so when you want to watch movies in Cinemascope, the motor will swing the lens into place, and when you are watching normal television, the lens will be off to the side and out of the way. There are a small number of different lens and lens adapter kits out there, so you will want to make sure you pick up one that will work with your specific model projector.

The future of Cinemascope will likely be every bit as bright or brighter than its past, which started all the way back in 1953 with the release of The Robe. Once you begin to look for it, you'll find that a very large portion of your favorite films are distributed in this format. If you have any further questions regarding this emerging technology, do not hesitate to give us at Digitech a call.

The NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) has established the color standards all TVs in America try to meet. And typical LCD TVs only meet about 72% of this standard. Audio Features

TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through any two-speaker playback system, including internal television speakers and headphones. It is fully compatible with all multichannel formats up to 5.1 channels. High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the two hidden, downward-firing side-mounted 2.2-channel dome speakers built into the TV.

SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass.

TruSurround XT audio also adds three audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.
  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the sound stage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.
Stereo broadcast reception is offered for MTS and SAP with 181-channel capacity. A sound leveler keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.
If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.
  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

Customer Review: I threw it off my 8th floor balcony and it still works!!!
This thing is like a piece of iron.... but its a machine made of chips and plastic I think
Customer Review: Time to buy!
Between the recession and the introduction of the 240Hz LCD TV's, the price for this big beauty is down nicely. We watch movies, Hi-Def cable shows and kid shows in my family, mostly, and this TV does a fantastic job with each. If your focus isn't on sports, this is an excellent television and a very good deal right now. If you haven't bought a TV in a few years, or this is a step up, be warned! there are a lot of options and features to work with. It is worth your time to learn them, but it does take a little time. If you routinely upgrade your computers or cell phone every couple years, you'll be fine. If you don't, be prepared to spend some time learning what this beast of a TV can do for you. I recommend it and would buy it again.

Once again Sony has come out with yet another top High-definition TV, the KDL32V4000 model. This Sony Bravia model is one of the best mid priced lcd televisions on market currently. It offers the high performance Bravia Engine to guarantee vivid and high contrast images. Its complex noise reduction process enhances low contrast images until they are crisp, realistic, and rich. Dolby Virtual Surround Sound and 20 watts of power guarantee an involving listening experience, which will put you in the middle of the action.

This fantastic looking LCD TV is part of the popular Sony 32" range. As always an electronic piece of equipment from such a well known and trustworthy brand name is always going to deliver to the highest degree possible. Sony offers the most impressive and sought after performances when it comes to HD ready flat panel TVs, there's no other brand name, like the Sony brand.

Coloured TVs are in, and so if the basic black on offer doesn't suit you then the KDL32V4000 is also available in a choice of red or white. Colour options aside, however, the V series is cosmetically identical to the W series we've seen previously. This means you get a glossy finish, with a - to our eyes at least - strange-looking perspex hole at the bottom. It looks kind of like a shower screen, but the only thing you can see behind it is the skinny stand and maybe a couple of cords.

After sticking with the same remote control design for at least the last three years, it was refreshing to see that the company has decided on a new model with this range. The KDL32V4000U simpler than previous models, with big, friendly number buttons, but some functionality is lost. Especially now that most functions require use of the new "Home" button to access.

View your flat screen from an 178 viewing angle, and enjoy less distortion and light reflection than you would with curved-screen TVs. Bravia engine image technology is accompanied by a 30,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio for a vibrant viewing experience, while a BBE sound system delivers the sounds of the cinema to your living room. The KDL32V4000 possesses an in-built Digital TV receiver which provides you with up to 48 extra Freeview channels and digital radio stations.

The Sony KDL32V4000 LCD TV is HD ready; simply connect it to an HD source via one of the 3 HDMI ports enjoy stunning High Definition. There are also additional component, PC and 2 scart inputs for you to hook up your external devices. Overall, the KDL32V4000 32" LCD TV from Sony is an impressive, feature-packed TV that delivers gorgeous pictures every time.

Customer Review: Nice set for small area, sound a bit lacking
This is a nice set for a small area, such as a kitchen or bath, or small bedroom. Picture appears excellent, depending on the source channel. It auto-tuned all of the analog & digital channels from Comcast, and filtered out the scrambled (premium) channels. The set displays guide information (channel name, program) for many of the digital channels, but not the analog channels. The included stand can be rotated to 90 degrees and used as a wall mount, or a standard VESA mount (separately purchased) may be used. Changes channels quite fast. The biggest annoyance is the relatively tinny sound, followed by the 9-10 second power-on time. There's a fair bit of tweaking room on the sound menu, but the low end isn't quite as full as one would like for a set listened to from a distance. The sound weakness was the main factor in dropping my rating to 4 stars. There aren't many options for a small *white* television set. I might have considered Sharp but their 19-inch white set has been discontinued. All in all, it's a decent set with a few shortcomings.

For almost twenty years, the perfect ebook reading hardware has been 5 years away. We're now down to waiting for a cheap enough, lower power enough paper-quality display with long battery life.

Once we have cheap and affordable ebooks, the medium by which we read will also be the medium by which can write and respond. Reading will cease being a solitary act and will become a social one eventually. You can see this already with blogs and the online likes.

So, I have been assuming that the ebook reader will mimic the form factor of books: display a page, and maybe make a rustling sound as the page is turned slowly. But it is taking so long for ebooks to arrive for the market that they may skip book emulation entirely and become general purpose browsers/composers. In which case, they will work better for blogs than for books.

In my opinion, format matters a whole bunch more than medium. In the physical world, format (e.g. hardcover, small-print soft-cover, magazine, etc.) gives a whole bunch of cues about the type and depth of the content. Photos placed in the right spots attract our attention immediately. The formats also tell us a lot about age appropriateness. I personally do not see ebooks catching on until they really have a format to them. Maybe that makes a bunch of different ebook reader niches rather than an e-book monolith. Who knows.

I think for ebooks to become ubiquitous, the content prices must become reasonable (and currently they are not). RCA ebook readers ahve been around for years, but I still do not see people using them on the trains, buses and airplanes. On the other hand, every one of my friend of mine has one or two of those. Why? Well, that is because we all read Russian. And Russian ebooks are dirt cheap in the first place (if not free).

So, yes, in that sense I do hope ebooks jump directly to supporting blog-like content, otherwise we might wait another twenty years before the perfect ebook hardware emerges and gain mass adoption.

Customer Review: Great little TV for the money!
I compared the picture quality of the Toshiba 19AV600U side by side with Samsung (at our local Best Buy) after tweaking both to their maximum quality and the Toshiba had truer colors with accurate flesh tones, probably due to the 10 bit color. The sound was also much better (and louder) than other TV's of the same size. If you can live without the headphone jack, then this will be a great choice, especially for a small bedroom or kitchen. One more thing that impressed me and my daughter was how the TV cleaned up the standard analog cable channels, apparently due to the noise reduction feature, which we put on high. Some of the channels even look as good as digital or HD. The 19AV600U also has (2) HDMI jacks and is a great looking little TV even when it's off. We mostly buy SONY but was settling for Samsung (since Sony is not that impressive in this size range) until I ran across this little jewel.
Customer Review: Great little TV
Great little TV. Questions about set-up were answered rapidly by customer service and very understandable.

The Vizio 37" LCD HDTV VX37L and the Sharp Aquos LC-C3742U are both high definition LCD TV's that were originally released with similar price tags (I believe the Sharp was a little more expensive at time of release). The VX37L follows on from Vizio's successful L37 model.

I am excited to compare these TV televisions as they are often the two models that consumers are looking at and can't decide upon.

Sharp Aquos LC-C3742U
These TV's were sold at CostCo TVs and may still be available there, or elsewhere online. Whilst this TV displays very good HDTV quality images, there is no way to actually adjust the screen size for HD signals. The sound is also not the best out of the box.

Vizio 37" LCD HDTV VX37L
This TV is excellent value for money even compared with the Sharp, its bigger named competitor. If your main aim is to watch HDTV movies and play current game consoles then you won't be disappointed by the crystal clear display. The sound out of the box is also considerably better than the Sharp.

I extensively search for real customer reviews for all televisions as I believe it is simply the best way to gauge raw consumer opinion. Consumer opinion for the VX37L has been extremely positive even thought it has now been superseded by new models. It just goes to show that a good TV never goes out of fashion.

Based on my own experience and customer reviews from all around the internet I can not recommend the Sharp Aquos LC-C3742U over the Vizio 37" LCD HDTV VX37L, despite its few good points. The Vizio just stands out too much and as far as value for money goes, can not be beaten.

Is the Vizio 37" LCD HDTV not big enough for you?

Think about it. The smaller the watch the more it costs! The smaller the watch, the smaller the spare parts! The smaller the spare parts the more difficult it is to see the interior workings and to repair or replace them. But how do watchmakers take a look at the interior working of delicate high precision time pieces without completely wreaking their eyesight? With the help of individual magnification systems called as eye loupes.

It stands to reason that watchmakers need a magnification device to check the interior workings of watches. Each watch has numerous gears and cogs that all cohesively work together to show time. Even a slight bend in one of the cogs and wheels irreparably damages the watch requiring brand new spare parts. But a watch maker has to be able to see the cogs and wheels and find out exactly where the defect is and watchmaker's loupes do the job just fine. Each watchmaker loupe acts as a single microscope screwed in to the watchmaker's eye. The watch maker can hold the watch with one hand while squinting into the interior of the watch with the other eye. These allow for hands free viewing while still magnifying the object so that details can be viewed comfortably in your field of vision. There are several different designs in the loupe structure. Watchmakers may prefer a single magnification of 5X by which ordinary details become visible. These are called as single lens loupes as they are made from a single lens in the casing. They are extremely well suited for watchmakers, as they don't require any devices for color correction. These single magnification loupes are the first ones used by every watchmaker to pick out large details. They are also cheaper to buy and readily available as they are commonly used in the jewelry industry as well. One very good example of this variety is the Bergeon 2611 Watchmakers Screw Rimmed Eyeglass and the Bergeon 4422 Watchmakers Economy Eyeglass.

Double magnification loupes are also present. Bausch and Lomb make a great one which gives double the magnification but with a single lens which is fixed in position. The other lens is movable and that makes it easier to focus the lens and create a deeper and much more detailed picture. The second lens can be attached to the single lens system as there is a bezel provided with both. All you have to do is focus the two lenses for a much more detailed picture of the interior of the watch. More intricate and high quality time pieces may require triple magnification provided with Hastings lenses. Hastings Triplet lens are specialty lenses especially engineered to accurately provide magnification while still eliminating the color distortion that occurs in ordinary loupes. A few good examples of these are the Basic Tripple 5x, 10x and 15x Watchmakers Lens and the ARC Form Tri-Lens Loupe 10/15/20x.

These light weight and easy to use loupes are just the thing that watchmakers need to repair high quality time pieces.

Customer Review: Samsung LCD
Great tv for the price. No need to buy a mount as the tv's platform swivels for easy wall mounting. Great tv for a bedroom.
Customer Review: Excellent TV
I think this TV was a great buy for my bedroom. I do not see the halo that someone described. I also can go into the menu and bring up the sleep timer using my remote and I don't find that difficult at all. I was not aware about the base being able to mount to the wall and so that was a nice "Freebee!" The base mounted very nicely to the enclosed brackets and so I have a TV that can be used in the bedroom and I can carry to another room if necessary very easily. As for the picture and sound. Both are just fine and I had no problem navigating the settings putting the picture size, sound equilizer and quality to my preferences. The TV auto programed very nicely and there were no channels that I needed to adjust. I do have cable FYI. I have two other LCD's also and I have no problems with this TV. Good Luck!

Customer Review: Excellent TV for the price!
I originally bought the 42LH30, but the 40 went on sale a week later for the same price. Between the two televisions you can tell a huge difference in the quality. The LH30 had an excellent picture but the remote and the housing on the set seemed cheap. When the LH40 came up for the same price I returned it for the 120 hZ. When watching a movie on Blu Ray the picture is AMAZING! It almost borders on life-like. I would buy this TV even if it was $200 more just for the faster refresh rate and the fourth HDMI port. I also agree that the speakers are excellent for TV speakers, and the ease of setup. I had it out of the box and watching a movie within thirty minutes.
Customer Review: Great LCD, great picture, easy set up!
This LG product is a snap to set up; no configuration necessary. Once set up, you can adjust everything and anything with their super simple menus. The picture is perfect, especially with Blue Ray application. The up conversion from DVDs - to - regular TV reception is also extremely good. The sound is great (for TV speakers) - much better than my old Sony. This is also a new product from LG, so I was a bit hesitant to purchase without seeing any reviews. We were orginally going to buy a Samsung - but with all the benefits compared, this was a great buy! I would recommend the LG 42LH40 to anyone! Everyone who has seen this TV has complimented on its style and great picture!

One fundamental decision to make when deciding on a new high-definition TV is whether to go with plasma or LCD technology. They both offer big screens, spectacular viewing, and thin packages you can hang on a wall. There are some major differences, however, and more than a little misinformation.

True: Plasma TVs have deeper, richer blacks, and better contrast.

In general that is a true statement. But because plasma screens are made with highly reflective glass, plasmas tend to perform best in dark rooms with no bright light sources. If your TV viewing is mostly during the day or in an environment with lots of light sources you may end up disappointed with your plasma's performance. On the other hand, if you're buying your big-screen HDTV to watch movies in a darkened room then plasma would be an excellent choice.

Plasma have another technology limitation. As more of the screen lights up plasmas tend to go dimmer because of inherent power supply limitations. LCD TVs do not have that limitation. LCD screen materials are flatter in texture than plasmas and are lower in reflectivity. That makes LCD TV's better performers in moderately and brightly lit environments.

Myth: Plasma TVs have very short life spans

Newer plasma TV panels have an expected longevity of 60,000 hours to half half brightness. That means that you could leave your plasma TV on for seven years straight, 24 hours a day before it would lose half of the screen brightness that it had on day one. Although there was some validity to the short life claim in the very first plasma models to come to market this claim is no longer a valid reason pass on a plasma TV.

Half Myth: LCDs leave mouse trails all over the screen

Motion blur with LCD TVs is only a half myth have because it remains somewhat of a problem with some models. The term of art is "response time" or "vestigial blur". The very earliest LCD TVs left aggravating trails across the screen every time an on screen object moved. Plasma TV never had this problem. Newer LCD TV's like the Samsung 40 inch have a very fast response time, 5 ms, which is the time it takes for a pixel to go from black to white to black again. Consumer performance reviews for the Samsung, as well as many Sony models and other high end LCD TVs do not report motion blur as a problem that affects their enjoyment of movies or even sporting events where motion blur is most noticeable.

Myth: Plasmas need periodic gas recharge

This was never true. Plasma TVs never needed to be recharged with gas although more than a few extended warranties were sold because of this misconception.

True: Plasma TV is prone to screen burn

For decades people had to live with burned-in images of the CBS logo or a stock ticker across the bottom of the screen. Image retention was an unavoidable problem with cathode-ray televisions and although it's getting better, image retention or screen burn is still a problem today with plasma TV. A careful viewer could probably avoid screen burn with a plasma TV but it would take more than a little effort if you play games on the big-screen or if you watched CNBC with its scrolling stock ticker all day.

True: LCD TV washes out at moderate viewing angles.

If you're always going to view your HDTV at a straight-on angle than LCD angle washout is not much of a concern to you. If you are going to put your LCD TV in a narrow but wide room, however, you may want to think twice about LCD. The people sitting on the far ends of the couch may not be too happy about their viewing experience. Angle washout that disappears colors and contrast is less of a problem with plasma.
